When visiting Bruges for those who like history an excellent attraction is the Torture Museum “Oude Steen”, located in probably one of the oldest historical European prisons, “De Oude Steen” (“The Old Stone”) brings a gripping exhibition of cruel instruments engineered to cause unbelievable pain and suffering on human body and mind. The more than hundred torture and execution devices in our museum are placed and commented in a chronological, judicial context which brings a new light and significance on the origin of torture and the use of these horrifying instruments.
The museum isn’t wide – it was a prison, but there’s a good space to move, a lot of information and figures in wax with the almost real suffering, victims of torture. No doubts that place isn’t “pleasant” for what makes a relaxing stroll through Bruges, because it refers to a period of how such people “legally” supported in their beliefs committed such atrocities. It is a profound journey in time that makes us rethink about prejudice, ignorance, control and power.
The museum is situated in the basement. The museum exhibits almost all the torturing methods used during the dark ages in Europe. Some of the equipment inside the Torture Museum Bruges were the real things used during those days. The museum as very informative, I loved this experience – only me was visiting the museum, my family chose not to enter, but this place isn’t scary as it seems.
You can read more about Museum of Medieval Torture Instruments in another old post from this blog – Prague, Czech Republic.
Some photos below. Thanks and Valew Valew !!! 😉
The Flemish people are smarter than I thought. One of the most effective forms of torture was to force women to sit there and listen to each other talk…No gossiping.
